NASA moon image current

Image 1 Caption: The lunar phase of the Moon right now---that is if you click on Image 1 since Image 1 does NOT update automatically. Image 1 is, in fact, linked to full data for the current lunar phase at NASA: Daily Moon Guide.

    Features:

    1. See Date & Time.

    2. See also Date & Time: Lunar phase: Current.

    3. For (lunar fractional) illumination, see USNO Table 2023: lunar fractional illumination. The table can be updated for the current year by updating the URL or by computing a new table from USNO: Fraction of the Moon Illuminated.

    4. Image 2 Caption: A plot of illumination as a function of the Moon's age (i.e., the day count of the lunar month). The current Moon's age and illumination for the current lunar month is given at NASA: Daily Moon Guide.

The day count 0 and day count 29.5 are new moon. Recall the lunar month = 29.530588861 days (J2000) ≅ 29.53059 days (mean J2000 to 7 digits) ≅ 29.5 days.

For a similar plot, see Britannica Kids: Visible fraction of the Moon's near side illuminated over 64 days.
