This is a Galileo probe image from 1997 Nov17.North is at the top. The resolution is ∼ 2 km.
This is a false-color image I think. But Io is garishly colorful because of all the sulfur and sulfur compounds.
The Io surface is largely sulfur, sulfur dioxide (SO_2), and silicates.
