Acropolis, Athens

Caption: The Acropolis of Athens with the Parthenon---still under construction after all these centuries.

The view is to the northeast (NE) and is from Philopappos Hill in Athens.

The Acropolis was the religious center of ancient Athens---the foremost polis (city-state) of ancient Greece in the reckoning of history.

To me, the Acropolis looks a bit barren. They should plant some shady trees to give it paradisal fantasy look.

But it is a classic of classical architecture.

There's also Nashville Parthenon right across the road from of Vanderbilt University. Yours truly strolled over to see it a few times in 1996--1997. They've got the most awful statue of Athena inside---a replica of Athena Parthenos by Phidias (c.480--430 BCE)---hideous vulgarity. Yours truly much prefers Mourning Athena (c.460 BCE)---classic serene.
