Alexei Starobinsky (1948--) of Russia and Alan Guth (1947--) of the US were the first developers/proposers of the inflation cosmology in the time frame 1979--1980 (see Wikipedia: Inflation cosmology: Early inflationary models). Guth also coined the term inflation (Wikipedia: Inflation: History).

If yours truly recalls correctly, yours truly was in the same room with Guth for a colloquium at MIT sometime in the time frame 1991--1993.
