So ** means "raised to the power of."
Now yours truly finds writing superscripts in HTML tedious and superscripts ruin the line spacing.
So yours truly usually uses the fortran way to write exponents.
Just accept it.
And fortran is NOT a dead language. It has just become specialized for computation. But maybe only geezers use it---and we grow fewer every day.
