Notes:
  1. References are Wikipedia and databases Sinbad and NED.
  2. M stands for Messier Catalog, NGC for New General Catalog, and IC for Index Catalog. Galaxies in the list in the Messier Catalog are also in the New General Catalog, and so have two names. Many astronomical objects have multiple names since every astronomical catalog tends to assign its own names.
  3. I have used NED data mostly, but the angular size data I have sometimes taken from Sinbad since Sinbad usually gives it in arcminutes (') rather than arcseconds ('') as sometimes does NED.
  4. The distances actually are usually uncertain by of about 10 %, and so I have quote more than significant figures just following the NED custom for consistency.
  5. For the angular size data, I have rounded off to the nearest 0.1' or 0.01'.
  6. The angular size data are written (major axis) x (minor axis).
  7. The galaxy morphological classification is mainly taken from NED, but sometimes with an alternative galaxy morphological classification from Sinbad. Galaxy morphological classification is a tricky business where exact identification is NOT yet possible.
  8. NED, in fact, seems to use de Vaucouleurs system mostly, but with Hubble sequence names for the elliptical galaxies. This may be the modern convention. The two systems of galaxy morphological classification overlap a lot and there is a correspondance table (see Wikipedia: Galaxy morphological classification: Correspondance table).
