HR diagram with named stars

Caption: A Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram with some well known named stars (i.e., stars with traditional names) of the Milky Way and some translations to Swahili.

    Features:

    1. The photospheric temperature for the spectral types along with the spectral types themselves are plotted on horizontal axis.

The temperature scales increases to the left by a senseless astronomy convention.

The spectral types are from the OBAFGKM stellar classification system---mnemonicked by "O be a fine girl/guy kiss me."

The spectral types are subdivided into spectral subtypes labeled by numbers running 0 through 9 going in photosphere temperature. The spectral subtypes labels are NOT shown on the HR diagram.

By the by, the Sun is a G2 V.

    2. The vertical logarithmic-scale axis is luminosity (power or energy output per unit time or wattage) in solar luminosity units L_☉ = 3.828*10**26 W.

    3. The main sequence is the locus of stars undergoing hydrogen burning in the core.

The main sequence phase of a star's nuclear burning lifetime is the longest phase, and so most nuclear burning stars are main-sequence stars.

    4. There is a Main-sequence rule:
        EOF

    5. The bands on the diagram of various kinds of stars can be (but arn't) labeled by the luminosity classes
