Caption: "The 'Glasses Apostle' in the Niederwildungen Altarpiece (right panel, lower left) of the Stadtkirche Bad Wildungen, Germany. Painted by Conrad von Soest (c. 1370--soon after 1422) in 1403, the 'Glasses Apostle' is considered the oldest depiction of eyeglasses north of the Alps." (Heavily edited.)
Eyeglasses were invented circa 1290 most likely in Pisa, Italy (see Wikipedia: Glasses: Invention of Eyeglasses).
By that time, they had been long overdue for millennia. Geezers, you see, are afflicted by presbyopia---we're always pushing our glasses further down our noses---but eventually they are too short. Laugh if you will, but the day will come ...
