The most extreme cyclones are tropical cyclones. The most extreme of the tropical cyclones are called hurricanes (in the north Atlantic Ocean and northeast Pacific Ocean), typhoons (in the northwest Pacific Ocean), and, in another meaning of the term, cyclones (in the south Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. In fact, hurricanes, typhoons, and extreme cyclones (in the sense of extreme tropical cyclone) are the same the thing---the different names are conventional.
