Marcus Aurelius

    Caption: The Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius. Erected in 175 CE, it is now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome which surrounds the Piazza del Campidoglio (designed by Michelangelo (1475--1564)) where a copy of the statue stands.

    Marcus Aurelius (121--180 CE, Roman Emperor 161--180 CE) was the last of the Five Good Emperors and a Stoic philosopher:

      Shame on the soul, to falter on the road of life while the body still perseveres.
