F.O. Stanley driving

Caption: F.O. Stanley (1849--1940) and his wife, Flora Stanley (1847--1939), driving a Stanley Steamer to the top of Mount Washington (1,917 m) in New Hampshire, the highest mountain in the Northeastern United States. They made the first ascent by car.

The ascent took more than two hours and was notable as being the first time a car had climbed the 7.6 miles (12.2 km) long Mount Washington Carriage Road; the descent was accomplished by putting the engine in low gear and braking extensively.
