Venus and Mars

Caption: Venus and Mars (circa 1483).

In Greek mythology, Aphrodite (identified with Roman goddess mythic Venus and planet Venus ♀) and Ares (identified with Roman god mythic Mars and planet Mars ♂) were lovers.

Renaissance artists would tend to see their relationship symbolical as well as poignant and, as here Botticelli, ethereal.
