Astrologers were probably often sort of like psychiatrists or mental health counselors. You went them for confidential, professional advice. And a good one probably gave you good advice by interpreting your horoscope imaginatively. You may even have taken that advice since you were paying for it. Kings and the like often had court astrologers so that they could have expert advice on important issues like war and peace.
Astrology was considered a practical science---something that was actually of use to you---unlike pure astronomy.
It was also probably comforting to know from astrology that your quirks of personality were part of the cosmic order.
