File:Domenico_ghirlandaio,_amerigo_vespucci

Caption: Possible portrait of Amerigo Vespucci (1454--1512) as a child in a detail of the Madonna della Misericordia by Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449--1494) at the Chiesa di Ognissanti in Florence.

Who's even heard of the eponym of a country and two continents?

It's probably just as well that a relatively obscure person volunteered his first name for posterity.

But old Amerigo was the first in the historical record to mention the Magellanic Clouds in 1503--1504 under the names the 2 bright Canopes (see Wikipedia: Large Magellanic Cloud: History of observation):

"So I didn't get the clouds named after me. So what."---Amerigo.
