Caption: A Japanese living room showing "key characteristics of Japanese interior design: flexibility, privacy, natural materials, and complete simplicity." (Slightly edited.)
The great thing is you have to sit on the floor: chairs always were a bad idea. And you can always unroll at futon for sleeping. And since the floor is covered by tatami, you can do judo whenever you like.
It's very tricky to reduce a Japanese living room to total squalor---but it can be done.
