Homework #16 (chapter 46): The Nature of Matter

Exercise 1:

a)      λ = h*p-1 = h*m-1*v-1 = 6.63*10-34 Js * 0.041-1 kg-1 * 960 m*s-1 = 1.7*10-35 m

b)      The wavelength is 10 orders of magnitude smaller then the radius of a nucleus, i. e. no diffraction grating could possibly be constructed.

Exercise 11:

v = 3 ve

λ/λe = 1.813*10-4

λ = h/p è (m/me)*(v/ve) = λeè m = (λe/λ)* (ve/v)*me = 1.813-1*104*3-1*9.11*10-31kg = 1.67*1027 kg è The particle could be a neutron.

Exercise 23:

Δx Δp ≥ h*(2π)-1 è Δp = h*(2π)-1Δx = 6.63*10-34 Js*(2π)-1 (12*10-12)-1 m-1 = 8.8*10-24 kg*m*s-1
