Making plans for this weekend?  Include our inaugural mid-month CONTRA DANCE at Charleston Heights Arts Center, Saturday, September 15th, with caller Greg McKenzie.  Also, the dance will feature the new SAGEBRUSH STRINGBAND, playing lively fiddle dance tunes.
 
Black and White is the theme of this Saturday's dance, as our dance is co-incident with the AFAN Black and White Party at the Palms Hotel.  For a fraction of the price of admittance to the Palms party, you can sport your Black and White finery or thrift store specials, whichever the case may be, at our dance.  Just remember that you'll be dancing the WHOLE evening in your chosen duds - and shoes!

Directions:  CHAC is one block west of Arizona Charlies, and 2 blocks northwest of the intersection of W. Charleston Blvd. and Decatur Blvd. From Highway 95, take the Decatur exit, go south on Decatur for 4 stoplights, and turn right on Evergreen St.  This is the street between the Arizona Charlie's Casino and their parking lot to the south.  Go west on Evergreen, and at the first stop sign, turn left onto Brush St.  CHAC is the 2nd building on the right.

COUNTRY LINE DANCING
 
People commonly ask about where country line dancing is available in the Valley.  The following are "word of mouth" - I haven't personallly checked them out, so call in advance to verify. 
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip:  Lynn Martinez will be teaching line dancing from 4 to 5pm on Sundays, followed by West Coast Swing Dancing (see below). 
  • Roadhouse Casino, 2100 N Boulder Hwy (near Sunset) Henderson.  My erstwile scout says "I have it on good authority that there are Country Line Dancing lessons on Wednesdays beginning at 6 pm.  There is also swing dance music from 7:30 til 10pm". 

  • Ballroom and Country Line Dancing for Seniors:  The City of Las Vegas Northwest Senior Center invites seniors (ages 50 and older) to have fun and practice their dancing skills at the center's ballroom dancing or line dancing classes. Ballroom dancing is held on Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m., and costs $5 per class. Line dancing is offered on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and costs $3 per class. Both classes are conducted at the Northwest Senior Center, located at 6841 West Lone Mountain Road.  Beginners, intermediate, singles and couples are welcome to join these ongoing classes at any time. Reservations are not necessary. Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.   • Sunday nights, 7 to 9 pm.  The Presbyterian Church, 1515 W. Swing Dancing, 8 pm, Second and Fourth Fridays, Sundays, Aruba Casino:   

A group of swing dancers gets together every second and fourth Friday of the month at the Aruba casino in Las Vegas.  There's a free lesson for beginners at 8 p.m., with dancing to recorded music from 8:30 to midnight. There's no charge, but donations will be accepted.

On Sundays, there are lessons for beginning swing dancers from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and for intermediate dancers from 7:30 to 8:30. The first lesson is free, then $5 each.

Las Vegas Mandolin Orchestra
 
Mandolin, mandola, mandocello, and mandobass players of any skill level are welcomed to form a orchestra of mandolin family instruments. The goal is to resurrect for the Southern Nevada community the wonderful sounds that were so common in the United States at the turn of the 20th Century. Music will include Italian, ragtime, Celtic, old-time, marches, classical, World Music, and other genres as the repertoire develops. ACCORDIAN PLAYERS and FRIENDS
 
This is a young club, about two years old, that tries to get together at least once a month to play for pleasure and also for anyone who has an interest in just listening to accordion music.  The group is open to players of all playing levels. Performed by the Los Angeles-based "Ballet Folklorico" and musicians from Central America, the show celebrates the independence from Spain of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rico in 1821, with dances from those countries.  Afterwards, a reception with food from all those countries. Conjunto Llamarada performs norteño, or conjunto, music, a genre of Mexican music that highlights the accordion and bajo sexto, a type of 12-string guitar, and hails from rural areas of Mexico but has become popular in urban areas as well as in the United States among the Mexican community.

Dr. Zakarya Diouf, Diamano Coura West African Dance Company, will present an exhilarating drum and dance workshop, facilitated by Dr. Diouf, born in the African nation of Senegal, who has done extensive research into African music and tribal and ceremonial dancing. He is best known for the Emmy he earned for his part in the musical score of Alex Haley's "Roots."

Flamenco, a dance and musical style that originates from Spain's Andalucia region, embodies a complex musical and cultural tradition. Join Margo Torea, of the Sociedad Cultural Hispania, for an overview and demonstration of the many different styles of flamenco dance in this evening program.

September 28 -30:  Harvest Moon Contra Dance Festival, Santa Barbara CA:    This year's dance camp promises to be better than ever with an all new format, to be held in the legendary  Carrillo Ballroom, with the best in the west Spring Dance Floor!   Special Guest Bill Tomczak on Saxophone will join Notorious for this event.  For the first time an afternoon of Swing Dancing with Rockin’ Rob Rio!   Many other surprises and exciting changes are in store, to many to mention!

November 3: 10th annual Fall Has Sprung 12-hour contra dance festival, Grass Valley, CA. The dance attracts more than 200 people from all over California, as well as a scattering of folks from Oregon, Utah, Nevada, and a few other states.  THE BANDS:  Notorious is holding down the evening spot. with Larry Unger on guitar, Eden McAdam-Somer on fiddle, Sam Bartlett on mandolin, and Mark Hellenberg on percussion;  The Hillbillies from Mars, who rarely play together any more (one member moved to Oregon), with Kevin Carr on fiddle, pipes, accordion, and banjo; Ray Bierl on fiddle; Paul Kotapish on mandolin and guitar; and Daniel Steinberg on keyboards and flute; and the local band Hot Cider.  THE CALLERS:  Joyce MillerSusan Petrick and Lynn Ackerson.  THE SCHEDULE. Dancing starts at NOON and continues, with breaks, until MIDNIGHT. Here's the rough schedule: Hot Cider with Joyce Miller from noon to 3:30, The Hillbillies from Mars with Lynn Ackerson from 4 to 7:30, and Notorious with Susan Petrick from 8 to midnight. There will be a short break in the middle of every set. There's no formal dinner break.  REGISTRATION AND ADMISSION:  There is no pre-registration. You just arrive and pay your admission, which is $25 per person. No discounts for late arrivals.  THE HALL: The Grass Valley Vet's Hall, 255 S. Auburn St. near downtown Grass Valley and just off the highway 49/20 freeway, with a huge dance floor.

January 18-20, 2008, First Cottonwood Caper, Cottonwood, AZ:  This is the inaugural weekend event for Cottonwood!  New Mexico’s Richard Wilson will have you doing flourishes you’ve never done or perhaps thought you couldn’t do. His easy manner makes the most complex dances flow. Arizona’s Deb Comly and Claire Zucker bring their calling expertise. Three bands :Tucson’s Privy Tippers , Tucson’s Round the House and Flagstaff’s Updraft will make the dancing dazzle. The first dance on Friday begins at 8pm and the last dance on Sunday ends at 6pm.

Registration: $65 Applications are accepted in the order received. Consideration is given to maintaining an acceptable gender balance. PRESCOTT: Folk Happens!  Contra Dance - First Friday of each month
Grace Sparks (Prescott) Activity Center (AKA "The Armory"), 824 E Gurley Street.  Go to www.sharlot.org/madness or call Leslie Loomis at 928-776-8699.  Dance is from 7:30 - 10:30, new dancers are encouraged to arrive at 7:30 for the teaching session. 
 
FLAGSTAFF:  Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music Contra Dance - First Saturday of each month

PHOENIX:  Phoenix Friends of Old Time Music Contra Dance - Second Saturday of each month

COTTONWOOD: AZ We Dance Contra Dance - Third Saturday of each month, September through April
Cottonwood dances are held at the Cottonwood Civic Center (also known as the Clubhouse) 805 N. Main Street in Old Town Cottonwood.  From I-17, Exit #287 to Cottonwood on Hwy 260, left on Hwy 89A to the Civic Center.   Dances are preceded by a potluck dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 at the hall, with a pre-dance lesson from 6:30 - 7:00 and dance from 7:00 - 10:00. $5 per dancer. TUCSON: Tucson Friends of Traditional Music Contra Dances- First, Third and many Fifth Saturdays!!!
