March 23 (Friday): Blue Diamond Barn /
Contra Dance
Join the Blue Diamond folks in
what is likely the smallest-town contra dance in Nevada!
Note different times and
venue:
7:00 PM: Family Dances; 8
pm Contra dancing.
The dance will be held in the Blue Diamond Recreation
Center, which is in the center of town, near the store (directions are provided
below). The Blue Diamond community "trying out"
contra dancing to see if it is something that they would like to offer more
regularly to their residents. The dance is open to anyone, and will be of
the same cost and structure as the CHAC dance: live music by "112, and Then
Some", lesson at 6:30 pm, and dancing from 7 to 10pm. However, if a lot of
children show up, we will cater to them early in the program. We did a
dance out there in June, and had lots of fun. So, pack up the dancing
shoes, and start the weekend off with an energetic evening with the Blue Diamond
folks.
Location: Blue Diamond Recreation
Center
Time: Family dances at 6:30
pm, contra dancing from 8 to 11 pm.
Cost: General admission:$6; members of
SNOCD:$5; students and active military: $3.
Music: Live fiddlin' music by
112, and Then Some (Kay, Dave and David, Barb, Curt, Vera and
Ed)
Information: 656-9513, or return
e-mail.
Directions: The
town of Blue Diamond is accessed via Rte. 159, which, on its northern end, is
the westward continuation of Charleston Blvd., and from the south, turns off of
Rte. 160 as the latter starts up the grade to 'go over the hump to
Pahrump'. From Rte.159, there are two turnoffs that take you into the town
of Blue Diamond. The most direct route to the BD rec. center is to
take the more northern turnoff, which is the first one encountered if coming
from the Charleston Blvd approach, and the 2nd one if coming from the south
(Rte. 160). The directions below are given for the northern turnoff,
"Castalia Street". On Castalia, go across the bridge, and take the first
left onto "Diamond St" (after making the turn, the ball diamond will be on
left, post office on the right). Go short distance to the stop sign
(village store will be on the right), which is the intersection with "Village
Blvd". Look to the left, and the red quonset hut, aka recreation center,
is about 50 ft. down the street ("Village"), on the other side. Park
wherever you can find space, or on the street.
If you take the southern entrance to town,
the "Arroyo Rd" turnoff, stay on Arroyo and go past three
intersections with streets from the left. After the 3rd intersection
("Allegro Street"), turn left onto "Lassen" (Arroyo Rd. basically ends
at that point) After making the left turn, take the next right
("Village"), and the rec center will be on the left, after a little dip in the
road. If needing a map, go to Google Maps, http://www.google.com/maphp?hl=en&tab=wl&q=
