Wednesday: Bulgarian Dance Workshop with
the Ethnic Express:
- Bulgarian dance workshop by Yuliyan Yordanov, 6 pm, at Charleston
Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush Street.
Yuliyan Yordanov
A native of Doyrentsi, a village in the Lovech region of north
central Bulgaria, Yuliyan Yordanov was raised by his grandparents and learned
dancing at a young age. A graduate of the acclaimed Academy of Music and Dance
Art in Plovdiv, he worked professionally as a dance director, choreographer, and
Bulgarian folk dance instructor beginning in 1993. He and his students
participated in many concerts, celebrations, and international festivals
throughout Bulgaria and the rest of Europe; in May 1995 they were selected to
appear on Channel One of Bulgarian National Television. In 1997 Yuli was honored
with an invitation to attend the traditional annual party for teachers of
folklore and culture hosted by the president of Bulgaria.
Since moving to the U.S., Yuli has taught Bulgarian dancing
primarily in the Midwest.
In Chicago, he leads the
dance groups "Nashencheta" and "Mitronija" of Sveta Sophia Bulgarian Orthodox
Church. In Milwaukee, he is a choreographer for the " Na Lesa Bulgarian Folk
Dance Ensemble”; for two years he served as choreographer of the younger group
of "St. Sava Junior Dancers" at the Serbian Cultural Center. He has also
choreographed regional Bulgarian dance suites for Ensemble Narodno in Madison.
As a musician, Yuli performs (tupan, tambura, vocals) with Malo Selo folk band
in Madison.

Relax from your first week back to work in 2007 with the
soothing tunes and dance moves of English Country Dancing, the
"more-refined" cousin of contra dancing. Think elegeance, grace, propriety, and,
of course, eye-contact and just a little bit of flirting... Sponsored
by University Historical Dance Enthusiasts. The emphasis is on
dances prior to 1700, particulary those that will be danced at the

lead by Latifa, a wonderful leader (and mentor to Linda) from Oklahoma.
Latifa has studied many of the works of Ruth St. Denis, one of the
pioneers of contemporary dance in America and a mentor to Samuel L. Lewis (the
founder of the Dances of Universal Peace), so we hope she will share some of her
wisdom.

Society of Creative Anachronism
One and all are invited to the Arthurian Ball with
the theme of Seven Virtues and Seven Vices to be held January 13th.
Countess Ealasaid will be teaching dancing during the day and there will be
a feast and ball in the evening. The event will be held at the American
Legion, 508 California Ave., Boulder City, NV 89005. Site opens at 9am and
closes at 10:30pm with classes starting at 10am. There will be a scrumptous
feast and lunch prepared; for any food or allergy concern please contact Diana

site fee is $10 for members, $13 for non-members, $6 for youth 6-15. Children 5

The local band, "112, and Then Some", will provide snappy fiddlin'
music (at a tempo of at least 112) for an evening of contra dances,
circle mixers, other group dances, and a couple of waltzes. If
you have moved here from another dance community, do come out and enjoy the
lively music, the camaraderie, and the laughter, and to get your dancing
fix! We encourage any first-timers to attend the 1/2 hour lesson that
starts at 6:30 pm, as it is designed to give newcomers a basic primer on
what constitutes a contra dance, and to help the dance flow more smoothly
throughout the evening.

Belly Dancing Class for
Seniors:
A belly dancing class for ages 50 and up meets at the Las Vegas Senior
Center every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. The class is taught by Jasmine
Gamal, who has taught dance in the Las Vegas area for 31 years. She instructs
the Golden Tappers dance group and teaches at the A to Z Dance Studio. She
says belly dancing is great exercise, and allows a lot of individual

Country Line Dancing
People commonly ask about where country line dancing is available in the
Valley. The following are "word of mouth" - I haven't personallly checked
them out, so call in advance to verify.
NEW: Ballroom and Country Line Dancing
for Seniors
The City of Las Vegas Northwest Senior Center invites seniors (ages 50 and
older) to have fun and practice their dancing skills at the center's ballroom
dancing or line dancing classes. Ballroom dancing is held on Tuesdays from noon
to 2 p.m., and costs $5 per class. Line dancing is offered on Wednesdays and
Fridays from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and costs $3 per class. Both classes are conducted
at the Northwest Senior Center, located at 6841 West Lone Mountain Road.
Beginners, intermediate, singles and couples are welcome to join these ongoing
classes at any time. Reservations are not necessary. Comfortable shoes and
clothing are recommended. For more information on these and other classes and

East Coast Swing Dancing
- Sunday nights, 7 to 9 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1515 W.
Charleston - it's just west of US 95, near Martin Luther King Blvd (see

accepted and appreciated to pay for the room and expenses (like name tags and
supplies). All extra donations
are given to Las Vegas area shelters for
battered women. Beginners and veteran
dancers are welcome and do not need a partner. Each week the patterns are
different. More than 100
students attend this class every Sunday. Most (80%+) are single adults.

Fridays:
A group of swing dancers gets together every second and fourth Friday of the
month at the Aruba casino in Las Vegas. There's a free lesson for
beginners at 8 p.m., with dancing to recorded music from 8:30 to midnight.
There's no charge, but donations will be accepted.
On Sundays, there are lessons for beginning swing dancers from 6:30 to 7:30
p.m. and for intermediate dancers from 7:30 to 8:30. The first lesson is free,
then $5 each.

Dance classes at the Cheyenne campus include both

The community college is again
offering "Bluegrass Performance for Friends and Fun" in
Jan/Feb. Once again, it's every Monday and Wednesday for five weeks. at
the Sahara West Campus (Sahara and Valley View). The textbook this time
around is Mel Bay's Band in a Book: Bluegrass Instrumentals. Cost
of the class is $125. The book can probably be bought online or order
through Border's or B&N Bookstores locally. Dayton is a great guitar
player and singer and would enjoy having more students this semester.

Las Vegas Mandolin Orchestra
Mandolin, mandola, mandocello, and mandobass players of any skill level are
welcomed to form a orchestra of mandolin family instruments. The
goal is to resurrect for the Southern Nevada community the wonderful sounds
that were so common in the United States at the turn of the 20th Century. Music
will include Italian, ragtime, Celtic, old-time, marches, classical, World

This is a young club, about two years old, that tries to get together
at least once a month to play for pleasure and also for anyone who has an
interest in just listening to accordion music. The group is open to
players of all playing levels. There are members who have 30-40 years
experience, as well as folks who are
currently students. Members play the button box accordion
as
well as the piano accordion, and there is a good balance between men
and women.

The Thai
Cultural Arts Association was founded in 1993 to promote understanding of
Thai history and culture through teaching and presenting dance, music,
crafts, language and cuisine. The group performs a classical repertoire of
dances in elegant, richly decorated costumes. Each dance piece tells a
story with body movements and delicate hand gestures, which take many
years to perfect.
The group’s presentation includes pieces such as Thep Ban
Therng, the angel dance; Manohra and Kinnaree Dance, a dance-drama
about a mythical half-bird, half-human creature, and Plai Bui and Nang
Tree, the banana tree ghost. World
Steps is a monthly world dance series featuring various ethnic dances and
costumes that showcase the wealth of cultural resources in the Las Vegas

Roldán III collaborated with his father, Flamenco singer Pepe de Sevilla,
