Saturday, December 16th:  SCA's Yule Holiday Celebration, Boulder City

The Barony of Starkhafn, of the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA), invites gentles both Kingdom- and Society-wide to join for a Lionhearted Celebration in Winter: come to the Northeastern lands of Caid for grand festivities based upon the sojourns of Richard I.

Enjoy the culinary delights of a feast which will follow the journey of Richard I of England (Richard the Lionhearted) on his crusade to the Holy Lands and his journey back to his English Kingdom. The feast steward will be delighting your taste buds throughout the day with examples of Richard's favorites, including an assortment of pasties from France, antipasto from Sicily, dolmas, pita, and hummus from Cyprus, Spanish tapas and much more. In the feast proper, celebrating Richard's return to England, more delights await you, with Beef Skewers with yogurt sauce served on a bed of stewed vegetables and lentils, Chicken from Acre served on a bed of couscous with pine nuts, the traditional Boar?s Head (a subtlety made of meatloaf) served on a bed of red cabbage, and desserts from the journey-apple strudel, custard tarts, candied citrus, and baklava. Any gentles with dietary concerns are encouraged to contact the Feast Steward prior to the event so that she may accommodate you.

As always at great celebrations in Starkhafn, forget you not your dancing shoes; the hall shall be dancing in Starkhafn that night! Entertainment both vocal and instrumental is expected from the premier bards of the land. The evening will include a table decorating contest and a silent auction. Yuliyan Yordanov

A graduate of the acclaimed Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, he worked professionally as a dance director, choreographer, and Bulgarian folk dance instructor beginning in 1993. He and his students participated in many concerts, celebrations, and international festivals throughout Bulgaria and the rest of Europe; in May 1995 they were selected to appear on Channel One of Bulgarian National Television. In 1997 Yuli was honored with an invitation to attend the traditional annual party for teachers of folklore and culture hosted by the president of Bulgaria.

Since moving to the U.S., Yuli has taught Bulgarian dancing primarily in the Midwest. In Chicago, he leads the dance groups "Nashencheta" and "Mitronija" of Sveta Sophia Bulgarian Orthodox Church. In Milwaukee, he is a choreographer for the " Na Lesa Bulgarian Folk Dance Ensemble”; for two years he served as choreographer of the younger group of "St. Sava Junior Dancers" at the Serbian Cultural Center. He has also choreographed regional Bulgarian dance suites for Ensemble Narodno in Madison. As a musician, Yuli performs (tupan, tambura, vocals) with Malo Selo folk band in Madison.

    Dances of Universal Peace:

There will be no dances in January 07; a 2007 calendar will be availalble in the near future.

Looking farther to the future, the DUP dance on 01Feb07 will be a special evening and will be lead by Latifa, a wonderful leader (and mentor to Linda) from Oklahoma.  Latifa has studied many of the works of Ruth St. Denis, one of the pioneers of contemporary dance in America and a mentor to Samuel L. Lewis (the founder of the Dances of Universal Peace), so we hope she will share some of her wisdom.
