The Southern Nevada Old-Time = Contra Dancers=20 determine their yearly changing of the guard in September.  Half of = the 12=20 positions on the Board of Directors are up for change, as well as all = the=20 officers.  If you wish to be considered, notify Cel Acosta at = 641-7467 by=20 the end of August.  The elections will be held in September = (TBA). =20 SNOCD members elect the Board, and the Board, in turn, elects the = officers=20 from their midst for the next year.  Anyone can become a = member in=20 order to vote, and only members can serve on the = Board.

English Country Dancing (ECD) is the = "more-refined"=20 cousin of contra dancing. Think elegeance, grace, propriety, and, of = course,=20 eye-contact and just a little bit of flirting...  Sponsored by = University Historical Dance Enthusiasts. This event, sponsored = by the=20 Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) has a very dynamic = and knowlegable=20 instructor from the LA area, Marsden (aka Countess=20 Elasaid), to teach and lead dances (mainly old and=20 some new-er) from England and Scotland.  The site is = The=20 Flamingo Seniors Center, 6855 W Flamingo Rd. (near Flamingo and Jones). = Doors=20 open at 10:00 am with dancing starting promptly at 10:30 am. The = festivites will=20 end at 5:30 pm, with the site closing at 6:00 pm. Share a Potluck = Sandwich=20 Luncheon: If you last name begins with A-L please bring bread for = sandwiches. The local band, "112, and Then Some", = will liven up=20 the evening with snappy fiddlin' music (at a tempo of at least = 112).  If you have moved here from another dance = community, do=20 come out and enjoy the lively music, the camaraderie, and the laughter, = and to=20 get your dancing fix!  We encourage any first-timers to attend the = 1/2 hour=20 lesson that starts at 6:30 pm, as it is designed to give newcomers = a basic=20 primer on what constitutes a contra dance, and help the dance flow more = smoothly=20 throughout the evening.

People commonly ask about where country = line=20 dancing is available in the Valley.  The following are "word of = mouth" - I=20 haven't personallly checked them out, so call in advance to=20 verify. 
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and = Casino on the=20 Strip:  Lynn Martinez will be teaching line dancing from 4 = to 5pm on=20 Sundays, followed by West Coast Swing Dancing (see below).  =
  • Roadhouse Casino, 2100 N Boulder Hwy = (near Sunset)=20 Henderson.  My erstwile scout says "I have it on good authority = that=20 there are Country Line Dancing lessons on Wednesdays beginning at = 6pm. =20 There is also swing dance music from 7:30 til 10pm".  =

East Coast=20 Swing Dancing
  • Sunday nights, 7 to 9 pm, at the First = Presbyterian Church, 1515 W.
