English Country Dancing (ECD) is the "more-refined" = cousin of=20 contra dancing. Think elegeance, grace, propriety, and, of course, = eye-contact=20 and just a little bit of flirting...  Sponsored by University=20 Historical Dance Enthusiasts. April 22 =20 (Saturday):  Old Time Barn Dance at CHAC
 
Last month, we had a lovely time with Special = Guest=20 Caller, Peggy Hesley, from Phoenix. Our next guest caller will be = Brenda=20 Goodwin-Cole, from Salt Lake City, in June.  Meanwhile, we can keep = our=20 feet moving and hands clapping with our local band, "112, and Then = Some", which=20 will liven up the evening with snappy fiddlin' music (at = a tempo of at=20 least 112).  If you have moved here = from=20 another dance community, do come out and enjoy the lively music, the=20 camaraderie, and the laughter, and to get your dancing fix!  We = encourage=20 any first-timers to attend the 1/2 hour lesson that starts at 6:30 pm, = as=20 it is designed to give newcomers a basic primer on what constitutes = a=20 contra dance, and help the dance flow more smoothly throughout the=20 evening.

Las Vegas Mandolin Orchestra -   = Mandolin,=20 mandola, mandocello, and mandobass players of any skill level are = welcomed to=20 form a orchestra of mandolin family instruments. The goal is = to=20 resurrect for the Southern Nevada community the wonderful sounds that = were so=20 common in the United States at the turn of the 20th Century. Music will = include=20 Italian, ragtime, Celtic, old-time, marches, classical, World Music, and = other=20 genres as the repertoire develops.   • Earlier this year, there was a listing in this newsletter for = Saturday=20 afternoon ballroom dancing at UNLV.  This venue has been changed = from=20 social dancing to practicing for ballroom dance competition. If=20 interested in competition, contact ballroomclublv@yahoo.com = , who's=20 sponsoring sessions for couples only who need to = practice=20 the steps they have learned in their lessons, or partnerships who need = to=20 rehearse their routines for upcoming competitions.  There will no longer be any=20 instruction provided at upcoming sessions. If you do not = already have a=20 partner, but are interested in finding one for the purpose of = participating in=20 ballroom dance competitions, email them with your requirements = (e.g.=20 seeking male/female, your dance style of interest, your level of = experience,=20 approximate age, and your phone number).  Someone will contact = you and=20 arrange to discuss your needs.
 
Country Line Dancing
 
People commonly ask about where country line dancing is available = in the=20 Valley.  The following are "word of mouth" - I haven't personallly = checked=20 them out, so call in advance to verify. 
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip:  Lynn = Martinez will be teaching line dancing from 4 to 5pm on=20 Sundays, followed by West Coast Swing Dancing (see below). =20
  • Roadhouse Casino, 2100 N Boulder Hwy (near Sunset) Henderson.  = My=20 erstwile scout says "I have it on good authority that there are = Country Line=20 Dancing lessons on Wednesdays beginning at 6pm.  There is also = swing=20 dance music from 7:30 til 10pm". 

East Coast Swing Dancing
  • Sunday nights, 7 to 9 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1515 = W.=20 Charleston - it's just west of US 95, near Martin Luther King = Blvd (see=20 map and group description at their website, http://www.turnar= oundtech.com/dance/index.html.). Free. = Donations are=20 accepted and appreciated to pay for the room and expenses (like name = tags and=20 supplies).  All extra = donations=20 are given to Las = Vegas area = shelters for=20 battered women.  Beginners = and veteran=20 dancers are welcome and do not need a partner. Each week the patterns = are=20 different. More than = 100=20 students attend this class every Sunday.   • April 21: Didgeridoo Workshop:  12=20 noon to 2:30 pm, at It's Yoga Las Vegas, 4634 Maryland Pkwy, #101. The = didgeridoo "is a drone instrument that is purported to have originated = in=20 Arnhem Land, Australia about 50,000 years ago. It is created from the = limbs of=20 the eucalyptus and gum trees, that have been naturally hollowed out by = white=20 ants and termites. The didgeridoo was traditionally played only be = males=20 during ceremony, and was also used as a means of communication by = different=20 tribes. The vibrational sound of the didgeridoo has a unique healing = quality,=20 and combined with the circular breathing techniques, it creates a = harmonic=20 resonance within the person playing it and also for those who are = listening=20 nearby."  Workshop will be taught by Australian Phil = Jones, who has=20 recorded several discs of didgeridoo music. $25 at the door, $20 in = advance at=20 www.itsyogalasvegas.net or phone 798-9642.   • A folk harp class for beginners will be held this = summer=20 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 43 West Pacific, Henderson. = Enrollment ends=20 May 5. The course will run for 14 weeks, meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 = p.m. on=20 Fridays between May 26 and September 1, and be followed by a recital = on=20 September 8. Harps will be available to rent. Cottonwood dances are held at the Cottonwood = Civic=20 Center (also known as the Clubhouse) 805 N. Main Street in Old Town=20 Cottonwood.  From I-17, Exit #287 to Cottonwood on Hwy 260, left on = Hwy 89A=20 to the Civic Center.   Dances are preceded by a potluck dinner = from=20 5:30 to 6:30 at the hall, with a pre-dance lesson from 6:30 - 7:00 and = dance=20 from 7:00 - 10:00. $5 per dancer.
