www.acousticroutes.com) or $15 at the=20

All right, before you scramble for your atlas and history =
books, you=92re=20
correct =96 Calgary has no sea access, =
and=20
Alberta isn=92t=20
exactly the breeding ground for the world=92s most notorious pirates. =
But THE=20
BUCCANEERS aren=92t letting those trifling facts halt their pursuit of =
nautical=20
and melodious distinction. Their =93disarming chemistry=94, strong vocal =
harmonies,=20
contemporary arrangements and passionate, high energy performances are=20
captivating audiences from sea to shining sea, as THE BUCCANEERS win =

Music.
=93Aggressive Canadian Folk Music?=94 you may ask: try =
envisioning a blend of=20
Celtic drive with contemporary attitude (plus the sporadic plundering of =
Klezmer=20
licks, Latin rhythms and the occasional 80=92s pop song!). Vocals =
dominate the=20
sound, with tight four-part harmony arrangements in every tune and each =
band=20
member trading the lead voice from song to song.
These multi-talented multi-instrumentalists switch =91axes=92 =
as often as=20
they swap vocals, and trade the songwriting and arranging duties for =
each piece=20
=96 a pretty democratic bunch of outlaws, indeed! Presenting an =
eclectic,=20
free-spirited live performance filled with humor and=20
get-outta-your-seat-and-dance energy!

Blackwood=20
for Musical Instruments
The African blackwood is highly prized for its =
wood, and=20
is under significant environmental threat.
You are =
invited=20
to a lecture:
The UNLV Department of Music is =
sponsoring=20
this lecture on Sunday, March 26 from 10AM-noon.
=
It will=20
be held at UNLV Fine Arts Center, Room HFA 147.
=
Brenda=20
Schuman-Post is a charismatic person, and her research on this subject =
is=20
tremendous.
If you have questions, please contact =
Dr=20
Caplan, by email (above) or phone (below).
=
Mpingo=20
wood, also known as African Blackwood and Grenadilla, is a primary wood =
used in=20
the making of musical instruments. Oboes, clarinets, bagpipes, flute =
head=20
joints, wooden piccolos, Scottish and Irish flutes, and fingerboards on =
many=20
stringed instruments including guitars are made of Mpingo. Mpingo grows=20
primarily in Tanzania and Mozambique. Brenda Schuman-Post discusses the =
historic=20
and current status of African Blackwood, and presents social and =
environmental=20
issues surrounding this vulnerable and valuable tree. She provides up to =
the=20
minute information about the tree, the people and regions in which it =
grows, the=20
harvesting process and the sawmills. Brenda also presents samples of =
alternative=20
materials used in the making of oboes and other musical instruments. =
This=20
presentation features slides and videos and includes a display of =
sections of=20
trees, samples of the wood, and museum quality authentic hand carved =
Makonde=20
sculptures.
For more information, contact Dr. Stephen Caplan, =
Professor=20
of Music, UNLV, at 895-3738.
