Our local band will liven up the evening with snappy = dance=20 music.  If you have moved here from = another=20 dance community, do come out and enjoy the lively music, the = camaraderie, and=20 the laughter, and get your dancing fix!  We encourage any = first-timers to=20 attend the 1/2 hour lesson that starts at 6:30 pm, as it is = designed to=20 give newcomers a basic primer on what constitutes a contra dance, and = help the=20 dance flow more smoothly throughout the evening.

People commonly ask about where country line dancing is available = in the=20 Valley.  The following are "word of mouth" - I haven't personallly = checked=20 them out, so call in advance to verify. 
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip:  Lynn = Martinez will be teaching line dancing from 4 to 5pm on Sundays,=20 beginning January 2, followed by West Coast Swing Dancing (see = below). =20
  • Roadhouse Casino, 2100 N Boulder Hwy (near Sunset) Henderson.  = My=20 erstwile scout says "I have it on good authority that there are = Country Line=20 Dancing lessons on Wednesdays beginning at 6pm.  There is also = swing=20 dance music from 7:30 til 10pm. 

East Coast Swing Dancing
  • Sunday nights, 7 to 9 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1515 = W.=20 Charleston - it's just west of US 95, near Martin Luther King = Blvd (see=20 map and group description at their website, http://www.turnar= oundtech.com/dance/index.html.). Free. = Donations are=20 accepted and appreciated to pay for the room and expenses (like name = tags and=20 supplies).  All extra = donations=20 are given to Las = Vegas area = shelters for=20 battered women.  Beginners = and veteran=20 dancers are welcome and do not need a partner. The Las Vegas Highland Dance Association will host their second = annual=20 highland dance competition October 1 in the Rainbow Library = amphitheater.=20 Highland dancers from all over the Western United States will be = competing in=20 traditional Scottish dances. Jason Petty performs tunes from Hank Williams and others on October 2 = at the=20 Charleston Heights Arts Center. 3 p.m. start time. "Jason Petty, an=20 award-winning, multi-talented singer/actor and musician, takes the = audience back=20 in time to the beginnings of country music. He gives rare insight into = the mind=20 of Hank Williams and re-creates many of Williams' hits. October 2nd, Tango Tunes for Guitar and = Violin=20 (Sunday)

Guitarist Ricardo Cobo and violinist Rebecca Ramsey will perform at = the Las=20 Vegas Art Museum on October 2. They play several tango flavored tunes, = including=20 Piazolla's "L'Histoire du Tango for Guitar and Violin." Four time World Champion Hoop and& Champion Fancy = Dancer,=20 Derrick Suwaima Davis (Hopi/Choctaw), and drummer, Eldred Matt (Apache), = will=20 present a 30-minute family program of dance and music. Dances featured = will=20 include the Horse Tail, Friendship and Hoop Dance where Davis will = highlight the=20 animals created by the formations of the hoops. In addition to a = storytelling=20 piece called Rez Dawgs, the duo will discuss the importance of the drum = and the=20 playing of shakers, rattles and flutes in Native American music. This = project=20 has been funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a = state=20 agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal = agency.
