Our local band has morphed into = ContraPoint,=20 with many of the same faces, and it will liven up the evening with = snappy dance=20 music.  If you have moved here from = another=20 dance community, do come out and enjoy the lively music, the = camaraderie, and=20 the laughter, and get your dance fix!  We encourage any = first-timers to=20 attend the 1/2 hour lesson that starts at 6:30 pm, as it is = designed to=20 give newcomers a basic primer on what constitutes a contra dance and = help the=20 dance flow more smoothly throughout the evening.

The Las Vegas Academy Guitar Club is proud to = announce its=20 next performance on Friday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Theater = located at=20 9th St. and Clark.  Admission is $5.00.  This concert will = feature=20 three large guitar ensembles, the LVA Guitar Trio and award-winning LVA = Guitar=20 Quartet.  Special guests include vocalist Kimarie Lynn and guest = conductor,=20 Bruce Behnke.  They will feature music of Robert DeVisee, = Gasper Sanz,=20 Moreno Torroba and Fernando Sor.  We will also perform "Girl From = Ipanema,"=20 "Summertime," "Blue Bossa," and "Straight, No Chaser."  The new LVA = Guitar=20 Quartet CD will be available for a $10 donation.  All proceeds from = the CD=20 sale will help pay the expenses for the LVA Quartet to attend the = National=20 Guitar Ensemble Competition held at the University of Texas-Brownsville = this=20 April.

Country Line Dancing
 
People commonly ask about where country line dancing is available = in the=20 Valley.  The following are "word of mouth" - I haven't personallly = checked=20 them out, so call in advance to verify. 
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip:  Lynn = Martinez will be teaching line dancing from 4 to 5pm on Sundays,=20 beginning January 2, followed by West Coast Swing Dancing (see = below). =20
  • Roadhouse Casino, 2100 N Boulder Hwy (near Sunset) Henderson.  = My=20 erstwile scout says "I have it on good authority that there are = Country Line=20 Dancing lessons on Wednesdays beginning at 6pm.  There is also = swing=20 dance music from 7:30 til 10pm. 

East Coast Swing Dancing
  • Sunday nights, 7 to 9 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1515 = W.=20 Charleston - it's just west of US 95, near Martin Luther King = Blvd (see=20 map and group description at their website, http://www.turnar= oundtech.com/dance/index.html.). Free. = Donations are=20 accepted and appreciated to pay for the room and expenses (like name = tags and=20 supplies).  All extra = donations=20 are given to Las=20 Vegas area = shelters for=20 battered women.  Beginners = and veteran=20 dancers are welcome and do not need a partner. April 30:  Mozaik - Henderson=20 Pavilion. 8 - 10 pm.  Irish legend Andy Irvine=92s dream of = assembling=20 an international super group of acoustic virtuosos is realized in = Mozaik. May 21, 22:  Zydeco Festival in = Sunset=20 Park ? or it has been moved to the Clark County Government=20 Center, Saturday & Sunday, 2:00 pm-10:00 pm, with = at=20 least eight zydeco bands from around the world. This is a = celebration of=20 Creole world music and culture, and will feature Cajun and Zydeco music = along=20 with a variety of food that has been influenced by the various ethnic = groups=20 that comprise the "Creole" Culture. The Phoenix Friends = are organizing=20 a special Spring Frolic Contra Dance in April.  After a few years = absence=20 Kathy Anderson is coming back to Arizona to call the dances for the = Phoenix=20 Spring Frolic Contra Dance! She is looking  forward to sharing = the stage=20 with The Privy Tippers and meeting her friends from past Arizona dance = weekends, as well as the new dancers. Kathy has been  calling and = writing=20 dances since 1982, from Alaska to Florida and in the Bahamas and = Europe.. She=20 is known for her energetic, smooth flowing contras,  exciting = squares,=20 quick clear teaching and a great sense of humor. Kathy will also be = teaching a=20 participatory squares workshop in the afternoon  before the = evening=20 Spring Frolic contra dance. Wild Asparagus is = basically the=20 best known contra dance band, and many will say, the best dance = band in=20 the United States, and hail from western Massachusetts (see www.wildasparagus.com ). They play at dance camps from Hawaii (ask Kay=20 Sanderson), to the Caribbean, to Europe.
