Our local band has morphed into = ContraPoint,=20 with many of the same faces, and it will liven up the evening with = snappy dance=20 music.  If you have moved here from = another=20 dance community, do come out and enjoy the lively music, the = camaraderie, and=20 the laughter, and get your dance fix!  We encourage any = first-timers to=20 attend the 1/2 hour lesson that starts at 6:30 pm, as it is = designed to=20 give newcomers a basic primer on what constitutes a contra dance and = help the=20 dance flow more smoothly throughout the evening.

People commonly ask about where country line dancing is available = in the=20 Valley.  The following are "word of mouth" - I haven't personallly = checked=20 them out, so call in advance to verify. 
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip:  Lynn = Martinez will be teaching line dancing from 4 to 5pm on Sundays,=20 beginning January 2, followed by West Coast Swing Dancing (see = below). =20
  • Roadhouse Casino, 2100 N Boulder Hwy (near Sunset) Henderson.  = My=20 erstwile scout says "I have it on good authority that there are = Country Line=20 Dancing lessons on Wednesdays beginning at 6pm.  There is also = swing=20 dance music from 7:30 til 10pm. 

East Coast Swing Dancing

West Coast Swing Dancing
  • Gilley's at the Frontier Hotel and Casino on the Strip:  "For = those=20 wanting to refresh their west coast swing skills, Lynn Martinez will = be=20 teaching west coast at Gilley's in the New Frontier, on the = strip,=20 beginning on Sunday, January 2, from about 5 to 6pm. Her teaching = style is=20 "workshop" -- every lesson starts with some very basic stuff, so no = prior=20 experience is required, but the second half of the lesson can move = into very=20 advanced stuff.  She tends to build on the prior week's pattern, = so that=20 over the course of the month, one can learn more stuff than one would = expect=20 after the first lesson. She rotates dancers during the lesson, so no = partner=20 is required. The lessons are free, and there is time for a half-hour = of=20 dancing/practice before heading over to First Presbyterian for East = Coast=20 lessons."

Tommy Emmanuel's career spans three decades and continues = to=20 intersect with some of the finest musicians in the world time and time = again. A=20 household name in his native Australia,he=92s garnered tens of thousands = of loyal=20 fans on all five continents. Known as a musician=92s musician,=94 he=92s = been=20 described (more than once, and by some of the biggest names in the = industry) as=20 the greatest guitar player alive today. He is Tommy Emmanuel,=20 C.G.P.  

Emmanuel=92s unique style=20 =97 he calls it simply =93fingerstyle=94 =97 is akin to playing a guitar = the way a=20 pianist plays a piano. While Tommy has many imitators, few approach his = mastery.=20 He even has his own annual guitar festivals, =93Tommy Fest,=94 in = Newport News, VA,=20 Louisville, KY and Dortmund, Germany.

Jazz = legend Chet Atkins=20 was one of the first people who inspired Emmanuel to pick up a guitar. = Decades=20 later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel=92s biggest fans, and is = responsible=20 for declaring Emmanuel a =93Certified Guitar Player=94 =97 an honor = shared by only two=20 other people in the world (Jerry Reed and John = Knowles).  =93I think he=92s probably = the greatest=20 finger-picker in the world today,=94 Atkins said a few months prior to = his death=20 in 2001. =93He=92s inventive, fearless and has a flawless sense of = rhythm. In his storied career, the Grammy-nominated Emmanuel has set = sales=20 records that have yet to be broken and performed alongside hundreds of = other=20 musical legends including Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, Sir George Martin, = Hank=20 Marvin and Joe Walsh. She is looking  = forward to=20 sharing the stage with The Privy Tippers and meeting her friends from = past=20 Arizona dance weekends, as well as the new dancers.
