Sterling Hayden (1916--1986?)

Hayden was a minor, but interesting, film star. His early exploits as a sailor and his impressive appearance caught the eye of Hollywood where he toiled as a male starlet in his own words. But a few films he proved he could act---in The Asphalt Jungle as the tarnished small-time thief and in Dr. Strangelove as the troubled general who destroys the world. He was also an author of his own autobiography Wanderer and a novel Voyage . Both are interesting rather than great. But they are off the beaten path which gives them a special resonance. If Hayden had worked more effectively at writing, he might have made an impression.
