Don't Panic

The sites/images are mainly those of/from Wikipedia.

  1. Images.

  2. bald eagle Images. There is a part about the Ben Franklin and the Turkey.

  3. capacitors Images.

  4. capacitor applet Images and animations. A relaxation method builds up a capacitor potential field. Must use Internet Explorer it seems and even then it doesn't seem to work exactly right.

  5. coltan No images. Coltan is an ore from which which tantalum (a chemical element) is extracted. Tantalum is one of the best materials for making small powerful capacitors used in cell phones. Illicit coltan mining in east Africa is threatening wildlife, especially the eastern lowland gorilla, as miners and rebels (of various kinds) exploit it ( Coltan, Gorillas and cellphones). So cell phones may be helping to drive the gorilla to extinction. The law of unintended consequences in action.

  6. dielectric Images.

  7. electrical potential No images.

  8. light-emitting diodes Images. These are much more efficient than incandescent light bulbs and may one day replace them. But they have disadvantages too.

  9. incandescent light bulb Images. See the section on power which shows that efficiency is typically 7 % to 20 % depending on the bulb power.

  10. permittivity Images, but not so good for intro physics.

  11. tantalum pentoxide No images.

  12. wild turkey Images. Has Ben Franklin's encomium. He thought the wild turkey was beautiful, wily, and edible. But the turkey didn't make the cut. Still it has a certain second string status---especially, the edible part. See National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation.
