Generic Course

Instructor: Dr. David Jeffery

The students's grades, averages per grade category, cumulative average, and current letter grade are shown below followed by some explanatory tables. The students are listed in extended alphabetic order by their aliases. Only students with aliases are listed.

The extended alphabetic ordering is
        ,-.''%*@#0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

and there is no case distinction between small and large letters: i.e.,

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

are treated in the ordering just like ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ .

Here is an explanation of the record for each student is given below for a example student record.

Row 0: MGM Grand is the student alias, known to him/her alone. The alias is only used for checking your grades. Don't put it on usual handed in material. The instructor knew what it was at some point, but usually doesn't remember it after entering it.

Cumulative average is the student's current cumulative average for all markable items. It's a weighted average.

Deviation is the students deviation from the mean in units of standard deviations. Don't worry about it if you don't know about standard deviations.

Letter grade is the students current letter grade. This is determined automatically during the semester by a Gaussian c but the instructor sets his own grade levels when all marks are in after the final. There is no need for any final grades of D's or F's.

The curve uses an 10-point scale: F,D,D+,C-,C,C+,B-,B,B+,A-,A. But UE has not D-.

Row 1: Readings: The first number is the percentage of readings completed. There will be about 40 readings since most days will have a reading. This row can wrap around as it does in the example.

1 means a completed reading.

0 means zero mark.

-201 means a dropped mark. There are some ordinary drops per catego A zero turns into a -201 if it is a drop. If the drops are all used up, the student gets a zero.

-202 if it appears is a special drop given for a student who was absent for some excused reason: e.g., illness, personal emergency, university event, professional event.

Row 2: Homeworks. The first number is the homework average. All homeworks are weighted the same in calculating the average no matter what the homework is out of. The succeeding numbers are the actual point totals for the homeworks

A negative point total indicates a dropped mark. There are some ordinary drops per category. If the dropped mark is zero, then that is replaced by a -201 since a -0 can't be distinguished from a by the program.

-202 if it appears is again a special drop.

Row 3: Special marked items: There is only one: the interview mark, percentage and total out of 1.

Row 4: The lab mark, percentage and total out of 100.

Row 5: In-semester tests: The first number is the current average for these If there have been no in-semester tests yet, the average is just the cumulative average again. The succeeding numbers are actual marks on each test: the example s has 29/50 on the first test and 31/50 on the second test.

Row 6: Final exam: The first number is the average for the final. Before the final is done, the average is just the cumulative average The succeeding number is the actual mark on final.

Tables: There are two explanatory tables at the bottom of this file.

Table 1: The columns of this table show the following:

Column 1: The category of the gradable item.
Column 2: The weighting of the category.
Column 3: The number of drops allowed for the category.
Column 4: The total number of items in the category.
Column 5: The maximum grade for each item in the category.
All the items of a given category have
the same weight regardless of maximum grade.

Table 2: This table shows the class average, class standard deviation, class mean GPA, and the ideal Gaussian GPA. These numbers are followed by a table with some redundant information and the class average and standard deviation for each grade category.
