Ast 103: Introductory Astronomy: The Solar System: A survey course at the beginning level which discusses the nearby objects of our solar system, the formation and evolution of planetary bodies and the exploration of space. A minimum of mathematics is required. Recommended for non-science majors. 3 credits.
    2. Ast 104: Introductory Astronomy: Stars and Galaxies: A survey course at the beginning level which discusses stellar systems and galaxies. Topics will include stellar evolution, formation of galaxies, and cosmology. A minimum of mathematics is required. Recommended for non- science majors. 3 credits.
    3. Note the catalog topics must be covered in the course by UNLV policy.
  3. Library: See also Library Search. There are NO library and NO specific external information resources recommended for this course.
  4. Artificial Intelligence (AI): NO AI may be used for this course and there is NO use for it in this course either.
  5. Course Website / Extended Syllabus: Find by googling "unlv david jeffery ast" with any luck.
  6. Textbook Substitute: Introductory Astronomy Lectures (IAL) which are free online lectures which can be found by googling "unlv david jeffery ial" with any luck, but it might NOT be the first item that is found.
  7. Required reading-homework-self-testings (RHSTs): The required RHSTs are specified at Ast 103 reading-homework-self-testings / Ast 104 readings-homework-self-testings. The RHSTs themselves are linked from Introductory Astronomy Lectures (IAL): Contents.
  8. Assignment due dates:
    1. Introductory Astronomy Lectures (IAL): The schedule for the IALs corresponds approximately to the recommended due dates for the required reading-homework-self-testings (RHSTs) as given at Introductory Astronomy Lectures (IAL): Contents. The actual IAL dates will vary a little depending on whether we go a little faster or a little slower. Omitting lecturing on parts of IALs may have to be done if we fall a bit behind the schedule.
    2. Required reading-homework-self-testings (RHSTs): There are recommended due dates given at Introductory Astronomy Lectures (IAL): Contents. The only final due date is Tuesday afternoon 4 pm after finals week (or the Friday final for summer semesters). However, to keep up with the course, reporting RHSTs done by the recommended due dates is recommended.
  9. Evaluation:
    1. Evaluation for In-Person Instruction (IPI): In-class exams 40 %, Final 40 %, Required reading-homework-self-testings 10 %, Group Activities 10 %. NO extra credit.
Group activities can be done in groups of one.
    2. Evaluation for Remote Instruction (RMI): In-class exams 40 %, Final 50 %, Required reading-homework-self-testings 10 %. NO extra credit.
    3. Hybrid Instruction (HYI): This case is for when a switch between IPI and RMI is required. Evaluation in this case depends on when the switch occurs.
