Yours truly tried pinhole projection a few times:
1. For a partial solar eclipse from the roof of a physics building in Barcelona in 1994---it sort of worked.
2. For the transit of Venus, 2012 Jun05---I failed, but probably I just didn't make a good enough pinhole projecter---I should have looked up how to do it---I winged it.
