The British Isles 1603--1688. View image for a magnified view. Newton was born in Woolsthorpe near Grantham in Lincolnshire in 1643 (1642dec25 on the Julian calendar then still used in England). He went to Cambridge University in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and stayed there to become Lucasian professor of mathematics. In 1692, he moved to London and became a leading official of the Royal Mint. He died in London in 1727.
