The concept or motif or meme ship of fools (German Narrenschiff) goes back to Plato (428/427--348/347 BCE)---it's a Platonic ideal---a ship without a pilot governed by the ignorant, frivolous, oblivious, and deranged.

The expression ship of fools has been often used as a title: e.g.:

    1. Das Narrenschiff (1494): satirical allegory in Early New High German verse by Sebastian Brant (1457--1521).
    2. Ship of Fools (1962): novel by Katherine Anne Porter (1890--1980).
    3. Ship of Fools (1965 film): Cast: Jose Ferrer (1912--1992), Lee Marvin (1924--1987), Michael Dunn (1934--1973), Oskar Werner (1922--1984), Simone Signoret (1921--1985), Vivien Leigh (1913--1967), Werner Klemperer (1920--2000).
