The horse head is actually a protuberance of a dark cloud. Note the abundance of stars in the upper part of the picture compared with the lower half. The light is been absorbed and scattered by the dark cloud. The red glow is due to Balmer Transitions.

    My physics research involves modeling the chemistry of dark molecular clouds

    The field of astrochemistry has matured into and important branch of astrophysics in the second half of the twentieth century. Kinetic modeling of molecular clouds has played a significant role in the development of a quantitative theory of the chemical networks inside the clouds.It is now possible to construct steady state and time dependent models which are capable of modeling 5000 reactions and 500 species. The results of these calculations may then be compared with observational data and inferences about the current phyiscal and chemical state of the cloud can be made.

    I have shown through my research that there is a theoretical possibility that bistable solutions exist in dark molecular clouds. Bistable solutions are a consequence of different chemical process dominating the cloud chemistry for various number densitites
