Graduate Admission Requirements
Admission to the graduate program is normally into the
Master of Science program. For either the M.S. or Ph.D.
program three letters of recommendation are required, as
well as a letter from the applicant to the Physics Department
describing the applicant's interests and stating the applicant's
reason for seeking admission. The GRE General Aptitude and
Advanced Physics test scores are also required before admission
to the department's graduate programs. International students
must also submit an official TOEFL score (minimum score of 550).
Admission to the Master of Science program
Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.75
for all undergraduate work or a minimum 3.00 grade point average
for the last two years of undergraduate work. The applicant must
have completed 18 semester credits of upper-division
physics.
Admission to the Ph.D. degree program
Applicants must meet the usual admission requirements for
the Master of Science program at UNLV. In addition, applicants
seeking direct admission to the doctoral program without
a previously earned Master of Science degree
must have a score in the 65th percentile or above on the
Advanced Physics portion of the GRE before admission.
In addition, applicants with only a Bachelor's degree
in physics must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 for all
undergraduate work or an overall 3.25 GPA for the last two years of
undergraduate work, and a minimum of 18 credits of upper-division
physics. Applicants with a master's degree in physics must have
an overall 3.25 GPA in the Master's program and at least 15 credit
hours of graduate-level course work in physics with a grade of
B or better.
