The UNLV Physics Department is now accepting applications to the Research
Experience for Undergraduates Program for the summer of 2008. Bright, motivated
undergraduate students are invited to apply for the program. The summer program
affords the opportunity to participate in the physics research at UNLV, including:
Students
have access to recently expanded research facilities, including x-ray diffractometer,
scanning electron microscope, an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and many laser
laboratories. UNLV physics faculty members also conduct research at national laboratories.
It is our expectation that every REU student will have exposure to Big Science
at national laboratories as well as Small Science on the UNLV campus. Students
must have completed their sophomore or junior year, with at least one year of
physics courses. A student who will graduate by the summer of 2008 is not eligible.
Students must be U. S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents, majoring in
physical sciences or engineering. Physics majors will be given preference. Successful
applicants will have good grades, the willingness to work hard, and an interest
in science and in research. Previous laboratory experience is helpful but not
essential. The program runs for 10 weeks (June 2-August 8). A nationally competitive
stipend, meals and lodging will be provided, as well as travel assistance to and
from Las Vegas.
To apply, send a copy of your transcript and arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent from faculty members who know you well. There is no application form. Instead, write a one-page letter describing your career goals, your interest in this program, and any relevant work experience and achievements. Be sure to state what year you will have completed by June 2008 (sophomore, junior, etc.). Please include your email address and telephone numbers where you can be reached after March 3, 2008.
The deadline
for receipt is March 3, 2008, with offers to be made shortly thereafter. Application
materials (except transcripts) can be sent by email or FAX. Official transcripts
should be sent directly from your school.
